C3SA Supports Fairdale Primary Through Cyber Awareness
On the 20th of November 2025, the C3SA team had the honor of holding a cyberwellness event for the Grade 7 Class of 2025 at Fairdale Primary School in Mfuleni. These young Gen Z leaders are preparing to transition into high school and the digital world beyond.
The Cyber Awareness session, led by Dr Caroline Magunje, Dr Laban Bagui, Zwe Mabhena, and Melinda Chakurira, was a timely intervention for the grade 7 learners, as there are increasing numbers of cyber-attacks and risks targeting young users on various online platforms. The School Management Team and the Organising Committee at Fairdale Primary School should be commended for organising the event to equip learners with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to navigate the cyberspace safely and responsibly.
Session Highlights
Foundational Cyber Safety: The first part of the session introduced learners to key principles of online etiquette, responsible digital behaviour, and how to respond to cyber threats. Learners were made aware of what to do and who to contact in the event of cyberattacks, including cyberbullying. A memorable highlight was when learners recited, and melodiously sang, the South African Childline number: 116, reinforcing the importance of knowing where to turn for help.
Peer‑Created Videos: Learners then watched and discussed two powerful cyber awareness videos drawn from a cybersecurity video competition held by C3SA in its partner schools in 2022. This learner‑led advocacy sparked meaningful conversations about online safety, digital etiquette, and the real‑world impact of cyberbullying.
Collaborative Poster Activity: To consolidate their learning, the C3SA team and Fairdale personnel jointly guided learners in creating cybersecurity awareness posters. Drawing from the day’s lessons, learners produced brilliant and insightful posters that reflected a deep understanding of cyber safety principles. The collaboration between the school personnel and presenters ensured that the activity was both educational and empowering. Learners who participated throughout the session and the best poster winners, walked away excitedly with well‑deserved gifts.
Career Guidance: Another segment focused on career pathways in IT and cybersecurity. The C3SA team shared insights into the growing demand for tech professionals and encouraged learners to see themselves as future innovators, engineers, and protectors of digital spaces.
Closing Reflections: Experiential learning is the backbone of cyber‑resilient schools and communities. By taking ownership of their own learning, learners can contextualise cybersafety leading to meaningful engagements, creativity, cyber safety culture, and future‑focused guidance.
Fairdale’s Grade 7 learners showed curiosity, courage, and commitment. Special thanks go to the Fairdale leadership and teachers for their dedication and collaboration in making this cyber awareness initiative a success. We look forward to seeing how these learners carry the lessons into high school and beyond.
